USA - Irak, 1926 Brief, unbekannte Handstempel, Overland Mail

Dieser Brief aus dem Jahr 1926 von San Antonio, Texas in den Irak trägt 2 mir unbekannte Handstempel. Die beiden Handstempel sind recht schlecht abgeschlagen, daher hier der Text:
Auf der Vorderseite des Briefes:
Dispatched By Ordinary Route / Fee Not Fully Paid / Baghdad – Haifa Motor Route / P.O. New York, USA”

Auf der Rückseite des Briefes:
This letter insufficiently prepaid for the route indicated on the envelope / Haifa – Baghdad Motor Route / Cairo – Baghdad Air… / … be prepaid 6 cents per ounce in addition to the regular foreign postage. (Post Office, New York, USA).

Gibt es einen Platz wo man die Amerikanischen Postverordnungen solche Gebühren betreffend nachlesen kann? (Vorzugsweise online)

Gibt es einen Katalog welcher dieser Handstempel aufführt?

Hallo Rainer,

hast Du es mit Deiner Frage schon bei Richard Frajola probiert? Da hat bestimmt jemand die "Postal Regulations" aus dem Jahr. M.W. war das einfache UPU-Porto damals immer noch 5 Cents - das wurde auch verklebt.

ja, da ist die Frage auch schon gelistet. Wichtiger als das Porto wären aber die Postrichtlinien bzgl. dem Overland Mail Zuschlag den aus auf Grund der Cachets scheinbar gab...

Habe die ersten Informationen vom Board von Richard Frajola bekommen...

The information you are looking for is in the "United States Official Postal Guide" The Guide is published monthly with the July issue containing all rate information and is usually over 1000 pages. The other monthly guides are pamphlet size and contain updates to the July issue.

The July 1927 Guide states that there is an extra fee of 6 cents to be prepaid for the Baghdad-Haifa routing. It also states that mail intended for this service should have a LABEL with the words "By Overland mail, Baghdad-Haifa" or be prominently marked. Now it gets interesting - were the labels printed by the Post Office or by the sender? When will the first such label on a US letter be found?

There is no catalog for the NY Post office auxiliary markings but the existence your marking shows that the underpayment of the 6 cent fee was common enough for a rubber stamp to be made.

The July 1933 Guide shows that the rate dropped to 2 cents in addition to the regular UPU rate of 5 cents. Mail for this service is to be marked "By Overland mail, Jerusalem-Bagdad." The h in Baghdad is now dropped?

I am quoting the 1927 and 1933 Guides as these are the only ones I have for the time period. The Guides contain detailed routing information. If your mail address is still the one listed in your AP article I will mail you the pages with the information. Are examples of air mail in addition to the overland mail to be expected. More research for you!

I have been watching your postings to various boards over the last year or more since I came across your web site on the Overland mail route. A fascinating subject. Do not think I will collect the stuff but will go after any NYPO marking for my collection.
